The Gaza Municipality warned today of an imminent environmental and health collapse in the city, asserting that controlling the rodent and pest infestation has become “virtually impossible” given the shocking scale of destruction and accumulated waste resulting from the ongoing war.
In a press statement, municipality spokesperson Hosni Muhanna explained that the crisis has exceeded the municipality’s local capacity, attributing the worsening disaster to the following operational and field factors:
* Piles of rubble and waste: The amount of rubble accumulated in the city’s streets and neighborhoods is estimated at approximately 25 million tons, creating an ideal and unprecedented environment for the proliferation of rats and rodents.
* Near-total destruction of the sewage network: Israeli occupation forces destroyed 220 kilometers (220,000 linear meters) of sewage networks, in addition to 15,000 linear meters of stormwater drainage networks, leading to sewage overflowing into the streets.
* Severe Pest Control Shortage: The spokesperson confirmed that the quantities of poison bait currently available to municipal crews represent only a very small fraction of the actual need to combat the rapid spread of rodents.
* Urgent Priorities: The municipality is currently prioritizing the transfer of accumulated piles of waste to the south of Gaza City as a top priority to alleviate the crisis. However, using bait alone will not be effective without the complete removal of the rubble and the rehabilitation of the sewage network.
The municipality concluded its statement with an urgent appeal to the international community and UN and environmental organizations to intervene immediately to support its crews and provide them with the necessary equipment, fuel, and systems to confront this health catastrophe and limit the spread of epidemics among the besieged population.
