The Palestinian Prisoners Club stated that the structural transformation in Israeli prisons has been ongoing since the start of the genocide in October 2023, emphasizing that prisons are no longer places of detention in the traditional sense, but have become “central arenas for the systematic killing and destruction of Palestinian prisoners and detainees.”
In a fact sheet on the prisoners’ issue during the first half of 2026, published Tuesday, the Club explained that detention is no longer limited to restricting freedom, but has become an integral part of the genocidal system implemented by the occupation. This system employs systematic policies targeting the Palestinian people physically, psychologically, and in terms of their dignity and existence, through an integrated system that includes torture, starvation, medical neglect, solitary confinement, sexual assault, and enforced disappearance.
The Club noted that during this period, the occupation authorities continued to expand mass arrest campaigns and the unprecedented use of administrative detention, in addition to holding civilians hostage as part of collective punishment policies. It pointed out that these practices are no longer isolated violations, but have become standard tools for managing prisons and detention camps. He pointed out that the testimonies documented by legal teams, along with the accounts of released prisoners, confirm that crimes within prisons have not decreased, but rather have entered a more organized and brutal phase. This is manifested in the continued deaths of prisoners, the rise of diseases and epidemics, and the sharp deterioration in their physical and mental health, consistent with the genocidal approach that has governed the occupation’s policies since the beginning of the genocide.
He emphasized that the data presented in the report represents the minimum of what could be documented, given the occupation’s continued enforced disappearance of thousands of detainees from the Gaza Strip and its prevention of international and human rights organizations from accessing them. This makes the scale of crimes and violations within prisons and detention camps far greater than what is revealed by the documented facts.
