A human rights center operating in the Gaza Strip stated that Israeli occupation forces, through a “systematic targeting” of cultural heritage, have destroyed 97% of the registered archaeological and cultural sites in the Strip.
The Protection Center for Human Rights, in a new report titled “Systematic Targeting of Cultural Heritage in the Gaza Strip: Legal Documentation of International Crimes and Prospects for Accountability,” stated that during the war on the Gaza Strip, which began in October 2023, the occupation destroyed or damaged approximately 97% of archaeological and cultural sites.
The center explained that the destruction affected 316 out of 325 sites, noting that this “reflects the extent of the targeting of Palestinian cultural heritage.”
The report documented the damage inflicted on historic mosques, churches, museums, archaeological ports, archaeological mounds, and historical buildings, including the Great Omari Mosque, the Church of Saint Porphyrius, the Pasha’s Palace, the Monastery of Saint Hilarion, the port of Anthedon, Tell al-Sakan, and Tell al-Ajjul, relying on official data and reports issued by bodies specializing in the protection of cultural heritage.
It indicated that the widespread and systematic targeting of Palestinian cultural heritage “cannot be separated from the context of international crimes committed against the Palestinian people,” emphasizing that the destruction of archaeological, religious, and historical sites, along with the widespread targeting of the civilian population and civilian infrastructure, constitutes the act of genocide, an international crime targeting the physical existence and historical and cultural identity of the Palestinian people, thus requiring accountability and prosecution under international law.
