With a belly heavy with seven months of pregnancy, Palestinian woman Hadeel al-Madani carries a gallon of water around her tent, performing simple daily tasks that the Israeli war of annihilation has transformed into arduous burdens that drain her body and raise fears for her unborn child.
Washing, cooking, washing dishes, and cleaning the shelter—tasks that were completed quickly before the war—now require hours of effort, from fetching and carrying water to washing and wringing clothes by hand, and finally, lighting fires to cook food.
Palestinian women in Gaza perform these tasks under harsh humanitarian conditions, under the scorching summer heat trapped in tents made of flimsy plastic fabric, which during the daytime become uninhabitable.
The already dire living conditions inside the tents have been exacerbated by the ongoing power outages since Israel launched its genocidal war on October 8, 2023.
The effects of these conditions extend beyond daily exhaustion. Pregnant women face increasing fears of miscarriage due to continuous displacement, malnutrition, limited access to medical care, strenuous physical exertion, and high temperatures inside the tents.
Data from the Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip indicates that 3,958 miscarriages were recorded during the first half of 2026, a rate of 208.5 miscarriages per 1,000 live births, compared to 64 miscarriages per 1,000 live births during the second half of 2025—a 3.3-fold increase.
Amid this reality, Madani lives in constant anxiety for her unborn child, spending her days performing arduous tasks without running water, electricity, or any means of cooling—a life she describes as “tragic” inside the tents.
In a corner of her tent, Madani checks her medications, which she keeps among her few belongings, fearing they might be affected by the intense heat or by rodents hiding among her belongings and in the tent’s soil.
“Our lives are difficult,” Madani tells Anadolu Agency. “We are unable to adapt. Life is tragic and extremely difficult for pregnant women in tents.”
She expresses her fear that these hardships and harsh conditions will negatively impact her unborn child’s health, saying, “I’m afraid my child might have deformities or problems due to the harsh conditions and heat. Sometimes it’s colder outside the tent than inside.”
Palestinians in Gaza are living in dire economic straits after the majority lost their jobs as a result of the war, which has left them impoverished and dependent on international humanitarian, food, and medical aid.
This aid is also experiencing severe shortages due to the stringent restrictions imposed by Israel on the crossings, thus violating its obligations under the ceasefire agreement in effect since October 2015 to allow the entry of the agreed-upon quantities of aid of all types.
On numerous occasions, Palestinian governmental and human rights organizations have warned of the impact of these violations on the lives of civilians, especially the sick and pregnant women, who also face shortages of medicine and medical supplies, exacerbating their risk of health complications.
Data from the Gaza Ministry of Health reflects the growing risks facing pregnant women despite the ceasefire agreement. The Gaza Strip recorded approximately 3,958 miscarriages between January and June 2026.
An infographic published by the Ministry on July 20th indicated that the miscarriage rate during the first half of this year reached 208.5 per 1,000 live births, compared to 64 per 1,000 live births during the second half of 2025 – a 3.3-fold increase.
According to the Ministry, April recorded the highest monthly miscarriage rate at 377.25 per 1,000 live births, while June saw the highest number of miscarriages at 790.
The data indicates that 73.6% of miscarriages occurred during the first trimester, before the 13th week of pregnancy, compared to 26.4% during the second trimester, which extends from 13 to 24 weeks of pregnancy.
The data also showed that 57.1 percent of pregnant women registered in 2025 suffered from anemia, compared to 42.9 percent who did not.
Since the start of the war, Israel has deliberately targeted hospitals, health facilities, and medical personnel in Gaza, causing the collapse of the health system, as repeatedly confirmed by the Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip.
