The United Nations warned on Tuesday that only 3% of arable land in the Gaza Strip remains intact and accessible to farmers, cautioning of serious repercussions for local food production as the military closure zones expand.
This assessment, based on data collected in late June 2026, was conducted by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT). The assessment revealed that the area of usable and undamaged agricultural land decreased from 601 hectares in October 2025 to 448 hectares at the end of June 2026, a decline of 25.5% in eight months.
The UN stated that approximately 27% of Gaza’s total agricultural land is currently accessible, but most of this area has suffered extensive damage and requires significant restoration before it can regain its productive capacity.
Greenhouses have also sustained widespread damage, with only 16.6% remaining usable. The situation appears even more dire in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, where more than 97% of arable land is now inaccessible to farmers.
The FAO attributed most of the recent deterioration to tightened restrictions on access to agricultural land, noting the westward shift of the so-called “yellow line,” which separates areas controlled by the Palestinian Authority in Gaza from those controlled by the Israeli military.The head of the FAO’s emergency response office, Rein Poulsen, said the situation was “dangerous,” warning that the chances of restoring local food production would decline further unless urgent action was taken to ensure farmers could safely access their land and receive the necessary support.
