On Tuesday, Mohammed Saleh, director of the Palestinian NGO Network in the Gaza Strip, warned of an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe, emphasizing that the area designated for civilian life has shrunk to less than 30% of the total area of the Strip due to ongoing forced evictions and the targeting of shelters and populated areas.
Last week, the NGO Network confirmed that the Gaza Strip is facing a systematic policy of starvation as a result of Israel’s severe restrictions on the entry of aid. It explained that the supplies reaching the Strip meet only 20 to 30% of the population’s basic needs.
The head of the NGO Network warned of a rapidly deteriorating humanitarian and relief situation, given the continued restrictions on the flow of aid and the record-high prices of essential goods in local markets. He indicated that conditions in the Strip are heading towards further deterioration.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Palestine reported last July that 67% of the Gaza Strip’s population suffers from food insecurity, while 10% are on the brink of famine.
OCHA confirmed that approximately 1.4 million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are suffering from food insecurity, reiterating its warning that the Strip is facing a food emergency that could escalate into famine if the flow of humanitarian aid does not continue and conditions on the ground do not improve.
Nearly two million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are living in catastrophic humanitarian conditions as a result of the Israeli blockade and restrictions on the entry of sufficient quantities of humanitarian aid. This has led to widespread malnutrition and related diseases, while hospitals are struggling to provide necessary care due to severe shortages of medicines and medical supplies.
