Theatre has never been merely a stage for laughter and entertainment. It has always been, and remains, a broad space for cultivating awareness and shaping the human psyche. Just as tragedy cultivates in us a sense of grandeur and fate, comedy can spark reflection on the contradictions and concerns of life.
Yet in recent years, the Arab theatrical scene has witnessed a worrying shift, with so-called “respectable” comedies increasingly relying on quick jokes and empty punchlines, with little depth or vision. This is not merely a matter of artistic weakness; it also extends to the impact such performances have on collective consciousness and the social fabric.
Psychology views laughter as a defense mechanism that helps people cope with the pressures of life. Freud, for example, described the “joke” as an outlet for the unconscious and a release for what has been repressed.
In sociology, Bakhtin pointed to collective laughter in festive settings as a liberating force capable of unsettling the authority of official discourse. But when laughter is reduced to nothing more than momentary amusement, without critical meaning or intellectual depth, it can become a collective anesthetic, reproducing oppression rather than resisting it. People laugh for a moment and then return to their reality unchanged, as though laughter were merely a temporary cover over a wound that never truly heals.
Critical Examples of Superficial Comedy
First: “Verbal Showmanship” Without Substance
Many contemporary comedy performances rely on humorous situations without offering any meaningful message. Some plays, for example, repeatedly make cheap jokes about marital relationships without presenting any genuine critical perspective on social issues. Instead, they rely on familiar stereotypes and ready-made images.
Such performances offer easy laughter, but they provoke neither questions nor reflection.
Second: Relying on the Actor’s Star Power Instead of the Strength of the Script
Some comedy performers rely on their popularity to draw audiences, regardless of the quality of the script. We see performances filled with weak improvisation and repetitive dialogue that lack any real dramatic structure. Some theatrical works, for example, are being reproduced today in forms that have lost the critical spirit that once gave the originals their distinctive character.
Third: Avoiding Serious Issues Under the Slogan of “Just Make People Laugh”
Instead of addressing important issues such as corruption or social justice, some comedies turn to safer subjects, such as family disagreements or shallow romantic relationships. This produces a culture of avoidance rather than one of active engagement with the problems facing society.
Great comedy, from the days of Aristophanes to the era of Duraid Lahham and the works of Gogol and Chekhov, has always been a form of collective catharsis, not merely passing entertainment. It has been sharp criticism wrapped in intelligent laughter—exposing contradictions and revealing illusions.
Today, however, we often see performances producing what might be called “psychological flattening,” suggesting that confronting problems requires nothing more than a quick laugh. In this way, theatre shifts from a space for reflection and criticism into a means of escaping from confronting ourselves and our reality.
This shift has profound consequences for the social fabric. It weakens social criticism and silences the voice of serious art in discussions of issues that matter. It also raises new generations who see theatre merely as a form of superficial entertainment, gradually losing their connection with the depths of tragedy, the boldness of dark comedy, and the power of experimental theatre.
More dangerously, such performances reinforce a logic of consumption and resignation, in which success is measured by the number of tickets sold rather than by the artistic value of the work or the message it conveys. Theatre, long regarded as the “father of the arts,” is thus reduced to a passing entertainment commodity.
The psychological dimension of this phenomenon goes even further. Psychology distinguishes between temporary emotional release and deeper forms of healing. Light laughter may release emotional tension for a moment, but it does not transform the structure of consciousness or stimulate questions about change. Real comedy, by contrast, is comedy that combines pleasure with reflection, producing something akin to “cognitive correction” through laughter. When comedy loses this spirit, it becomes a new kind of cultural opium.
The responsibility cannot be placed on the audience alone. Cultural institutions and critics also bear a significant share of the responsibility for this situation. The absence of serious criticism and the lack of support for performances with deeper and more meaningful content leave the door open for a commercial model devoid of any substantial message.
The solution is not to fight comedy or do away with it, but to restore it to its original role: comedy that makes us laugh and think, exposes and criticizes, and encourages the audience to leave the theatre carrying new questions about themselves and the world around them. This is the kind of comedy that does not run away from tragedy, but uses laughter to illuminate its different dimensions, as we find in serious theatre and in the deeper forms of comedy.
Superficial comedy, then, is not simply a matter of artistic weakness. It can become one of the tools for dulling the mind and flattening emotional sensibility. Real theatre, by contrast, is theatre that brings pleasure and meaning together, making laughter a doorway to thought rather than a substitute for it.
