The Guardian published a report by Siham Tantash and Lorenzo Tondo stating that the suffering in Gaza has become a hot topic in the election campaigns, while Palestinians are now expecting the worst from the Israeli elections.
The humanitarian catastrophe is being ignored in these campaigns, as the two main contenders, Gadi Eisenkot and Benjamin Netanyahu, pledge to end Hamas rule. The report added that as Israel prepares to go to the polls on Tuesday, Palestinians in Gaza are anxiously awaiting a result that could determine their future, knowing that their fate is tied to the state that has reduced much of their land and property to rubble and killed nearly 75,000 people.
Gaza, where nearly a million displaced Palestinians face dire health conditions, a severe water shortage, and the constant threat of Israeli airstrikes, is largely absent from the election campaign.
Both Benjamin Netanyahu’s far-right coalition and the opposition Yesh Atid party, led by Gadi Eisenkot, focused on destroying Hamas in the wake of the October 7 attacks and the shockwaves it sent through Israeli society. Meanwhile, the unfolding humanitarian catastrophe on the other side of the border received little, if any, attention.
“We hope that a government less inclined toward killing, displacement, and annihilation will take power,” the newspaper quoted Sami Abu Rumi, 47, from Rafah, now displaced in the Mawasi area of Khan Younis. “But ultimately, we see that the thinking of Israeli governments is largely the same.”
Neither Netanyahu nor Eisenkot offered any clear plans for the future of Gaza. Both pledged to end Hamas rule in the Strip, and both supported President Donald Trump’s controversial plan for Gaza’s reconstruction.
