A family visit inside a tent for displaced people in the Al-Mawasi area of Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip, turned into a tragedy when a fire broke out, killing two infants. The incident occurred amidst harsh living conditions that force displaced families to resort to fires for cooking gas.
The fire broke out on Friday afternoon, causing severe burns to the two babies, who succumbed to their injuries on Saturday morning.
Nasser Medical Complex announced the deaths of the two infants, Habiba Mohammed Zannoun, aged two months, and Aseel Abu Suhaiban, aged seven months, who died from severe burns sustained in the fire that engulfed their tent in the Al-Mawasi area.
The incident highlights the increasing dangers faced by displaced people in their temporary shelters, particularly as many families are forced to light fires for cooking and heating due to the lack of safe alternatives. The grandmother of the two girls said that her daughter had come to visit them in their tent in the Al-Mawasi area, west of Khan Younis, when a fire suddenly broke out while the family was sitting, severely burning her granddaughters.
She explained that one of the victims, Habiba, was her granddaughter, noting that she died on the day she was scheduled to receive her two-month vaccinations.
She added that the mother of the infant Asil rushed to rescue her child from the fire and was also burned, requiring hospitalization. Both infants were admitted to the intensive care unit due to the severity of their injuries.
The grandmother indicated that the two girls passed away on Saturday morning from their severe burns, saying, “Their small bodies couldn’t withstand the serious injuries.”
