In an attempt to reclaim a piece of their childhood, stolen by the Israeli war of genocide, Palestinian children in the Gaza Strip transformed their experiences of displacement and homelessness into paintings and artworks, expressing their longing for freedom, safety, and peace.
This came during an exhibition titled “Beyond the Gray,” inaugurated by the Palestinian Red Crescent Society on Monday in Khan Younis, in the southern Gaza Strip. The children used drawing and hand-crafted sculptures to depict their suffering and their hopes for a life that transcends the scenes of destruction left by the war.
The exhibited works ranged from birds symbolizing freedom and flowers representing the tenacity of life to white doves carrying wishes for peace.
While some children evoked scenes of destruction and displacement, others chose to paint nature and the sky in vibrant colors, attempting to express the life they yearn to regain.
The young girl, Raw’a Ahmed Abu Ziada, stood before her artwork, created using paper pulp and cork, to explain the messages she wanted to convey through a bird and a flower. Raw’a told Anadolu Agency that “the bird symbolizes the freedom that children were deprived of during the war, while the flower represents the pulse of life and the future.”
She explained that she turned to drawing to release the pent-up energy and negative emotions resulting from the difficult moments she experienced during the war and displacement.
