The Palestinian Civil Defense in the Gaza Strip announced on Saturday the recovery of the bodies of 112 Palestinians from under the rubble of homes destroyed by Israel during its offensive in the Sabra neighborhood, south of Gaza City. The operation, which involved 136 hours of arduous work with limited resources, was completed today.
In a statement, the Civil Defense in Gaza said its teams concluded their search for the bodies of the martyrs, an operation that began approximately two weeks ago in a residential block destroyed by the Israeli occupation forces while its residents were inside.
On November 23, 2023, the Israeli army committed a massacre by bombing a residential block containing the homes of the Hasayna and Abu Sharia families in Sabra, just before the first ceasefire went into effect on November 24.
The Civil Defense continued: “During arduous search operations lasting approximately 136 hours (spread over about two weeks), teams were able to recover the bodies and remains of 112 martyrs, including the bodies of 40 children, 38 women, and 7 people with disabilities.”
The statement quoted the project’s general supervisor, Muhammad Abu Dan, as saying that “teams were unable to locate 157 bodies that remained missing under the rubble.”
Regarding the difficulties of the work, Abu Dan explained that the lack of equipment posed the greatest challenge, as rescue teams were “digging with their bare hands among the concrete and steel.”
He pointed out that “some bodies and remains were entangled and trapped within the concrete and reinforcing steel, indicating the size of the missiles used and their devastating impact.”
He confirmed that many bodies “were obliterated and vaporized due to the intensity of the explosion.”
Abu Dan called on all humanitarian organizations and bodies to pressure Israel to allow the entry of equipment and devices appropriate to the scale of the destruction so that they can continue the process of recovering bodies.
