The collapse of the health sector in Gaza is no longer limited to medicine shortages or hospitals being out of service; it has extended to the ambulance and emergency system, which represents the first line of defense for saving the wounded and sick.
With the ongoing war, the blockade, and the closure of crossings, the rate at which ambulances are being taken out of service is accelerating, whether due to direct targeting or the inability to provide even the most basic maintenance supplies. This threatens the collapse of one of the most important pillars of the health system in the Strip.
This comes at a time when medical teams are facing unprecedented pressure with thousands of weekly missions, while fears are growing that the delayed arrival of ambulances will become a direct cause of further loss of life.
Mahmoud Hammad, Director General of Administrative Affairs at the Ministry of Health in Gaza, warned that about 70% of the ministry’s vehicles are out of service as a result of the ongoing blockade, direct targeting, the prevention of the entry of tires, batteries, oil, and spare parts, in addition to the accumulation of technical malfunctions.
Hammad stated that the crisis now threatens to deprive thousands of wounded and sick people of access to hospitals and hinders the ability of medical teams to perform their duties. He explained that the Ministry of Health owns 82 ambulances, 39 of which are completely out of service, while 17 others need urgent maintenance, warning that continuing to prevent the entry of maintenance supplies is pushing the system towards complete collapse.
For his part, the Director of the Ambulance and Emergency Unit at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Iyad Zaqout, confirmed that the ambulance system is approaching a stage of complete paralysis, explaining that an ambulance may stop completely just because it needs a single tire, due to the complete depletion of basic spare parts.
