Satellite imagery has become a vital tool for beekeepers in the border regions of southern Lebanon to monitor the condition of hundreds of beehives trapped in areas difficult to access due to ongoing Israeli military operations and attacks.
Beekeepers from the border town of Shebaa told Anadolu Agency in separate interviews that satellite images have become their only means of determining whether their apiaries are still standing, after Israeli attacks prevented them from reaching or rescuing their hives. They fear the bees will perish and they will lose their livelihood.
Since March 2, 2016, Lebanon has been subjected to continuous Israeli aggression, resulting in the deaths of 4,333 people and injuries to 12,236 others, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health. The attacks have also caused widespread destruction in border areas and displaced thousands of residents.
Last April, the Israeli army declared what it called the “Yellow Line” south of the Litani River, designating an area extending to the border as a “security buffer zone.” This has prevented thousands of residents, including beekeepers, from accessing their agricultural lands and properties.
Seven beekeepers from the town of Shebaa in the Hamoul region left behind approximately 390 beehives. They are now demanding that Lebanese authorities establish a mechanism that will allow them to inspect their lands and assess the damage in order to rebuild their beekeeping operations.
