The American magazine “Newsweek” reported on Saturday that Saudi Arabia is facing unprecedented security challenges as regional tensions escalate, while it seeks to protect its economic project linked to “Vision 2030,” amid threats coming from several fronts, most notably the escalation with Yemen.Exclusive Follow-ups – Al-Khabar Al-Yemeni:The magazine explained in its report that Iranian operations in the Gulf, along with Sana’a forces’ attacks on Saudi ships in the Red Sea, have pushed Riyadh to face simultaneous pressures on its most important energy export routes, after navigation in the Gulf was disrupted and alternative routes in the Red Sea were exposed to new threats.The report added that Saudi Arabia is seeking to form a naval coalition of 14 countries to protect navigation, coinciding with escalating tension on the northern front following attacks claimed by armed Iraqi factions, which were followed by a joint American-Saudi military response.The magazine quoted retired Saudi Brigadier General Abdullah bin Farhan Al-Shaya as saying that the war in Yemen has demonstrated the limits of military force in confronting armed groups that rely on guerrilla warfare, drones, and missiles.A Harsh Lesson:It also quoted Dana Stroul, former US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for the Middle East, as saying that Saudi Arabia has learned a “harsh lesson” that military force alone isn’t enough to confront Sana’a forces, warning that any return to a wide-scale war in Yemen would be destructive for the Kingdom and its economic projects.Stroul affirmed that American and Israeli military campaigns against Iran or Sana’a forces have not achieved decisive results, considering that the current security threats represent a real test for Saudi Arabia’s economic and strategic plans.
