The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) confirmed that at least 300 children have been killed in the Gaza Strip in the 300 days since the ceasefire was declared in October 2015, warning that child casualties continue despite pledges to end hostilities.
UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, Edward Beigbeder, stated in a press conference on Thursday that the ceasefire, “which leaves, on average, one child dead every day, is failing children,” emphasizing that hundreds of other children have been injured, most of them seriously.
He added that the children of Gaza are still waiting for “the end of the violence they were promised,” noting that recent statements outlining a roadmap for the next phase of the ceasefire, including steps to end hostilities and expand humanitarian aid, offer a glimmer of hope for stopping the killing of children. However, he stressed that previous promises have not been fulfilled and that this time the agreements must be translated into concrete actions. A statement issued by UNICEF called on all parties to uphold their obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law and human rights law, emphasizing the need to protect children and ensure their access to basic goods and services.
In this context, the Government Media Office in Gaza revealed today that Israeli occupation forces committed 4,091 violations of the ceasefire agreement during the past 300 days, resulting in the deaths of 1,254 Palestinians and injuries to 4,121 others, in addition to the arrest of 159 people during the agreement’s implementation period.
The genocidal war waged by the Israeli occupation forces on the Gaza Strip since October 8, 2013, with US support, has continued, leaving more than 73,000 martyrs and over 174,000 wounded, most of whom are children and women, according to the latest Palestinian statistics.
