Amidst the displacement tents and shelters in the Gaza Strip, children gather around a young man dressed in colorful clothes, wearing a red nose and a wig. He tries to bring joy to the hearts of children worn down by the trauma of the war waged by Israel on the Strip.
The clown moves among the children, organizing games, playing with them, and painting their faces, while their laughter echoes in a place whose inhabitants have grown accustomed to scenes of fear, destruction, and displacement during the war.
But behind these colorful costumes, the clowns themselves bear the scars of war. They too have been displaced, some losing their homes, friends, and neighbors, and they live in dire economic circumstances. They don the clown costumes, which, out of necessity, offer a respite from a harsh reality in all its details.
Although toys and other forms of entertainment are unavailable in Gaza due to the Israeli occupation forces’ ban on their entry, “Uncle Tito” resorted to making his own toys and games.
Salem recounts an incident that remains etched in his memory from his time performing among the tents of displaced people. He offered psychological support to a child, only to return about a week later to find that the child’s family had killed him.
“I was deeply affected by this,” Salem says. “Now I hug the children I meet at recreational activities because I might never see them again.”
“Uncle Tito” forgets his worries and finds relief from his stress when he sees the children happy and joyful with his performances. He feels he has accomplished something amidst the immense pressures faced by the children of Gaza.
Despite the dwindling job opportunities and meager income in Gaza, Salem believes that what matters most to him is not the financial compensation, but his ability to offer something to the children.
He adds, “The payment we receive is symbolic. What’s most important to us is providing support to the children and being a reason for putting a smile on their faces.”
