Lebanese cancer patient Maida Sakhnini, in her forties, suffered severe complications following her second chemotherapy session. She experienced facial and body swelling, intense redness, and blurred vision, requiring multiple visits to the emergency room. This experience raised questions for her about whether the symptoms were caused by the treatment itself or by a problem with the medication’s quality.
Sakhnini explained that the symptoms persisted for 10 to 12 days after the treatment sessions. Her doctor attributed her symptoms to the chemotherapy, but the circulation of information about cancer drugs that may not meet required standards heightened her concerns, according to a report on Al Jazeera’s digital platforms.
A debate ensued in Lebanon regarding the fate of six types of commonly used cancer drugs, amid questions about their quality, effectiveness, and manufacturing sources, before the Ministry of Health referred the matter to the Public Prosecutor’s Office for investigation.
The patient called on the authorities to tighten controls on cancer medications and ensure that patients receive the treatment prescribed by their doctors. She also requested that, if a medication is substituted, the source, composition, and effectiveness of the alternative be clearly explained, arguing that even the mere mention of a potentially unsafe drug adds psychological burden to the patient.
In a related context, Dr. Abdul Rahman Al-Zari, a physician and member of the Lebanese Parliament’s Health Committee, explained that the state has been committed for years to providing some treatments for intractable diseases according to protocols developed in coordination with oncologists. However, the manufacturers and sources of the medications have varied depending on the results of procurement tenders.
Al-Zari called for a distinction between the medicines imported by the state through official channels, which he described as suitable and of good quality, and medicines that reached the Lebanese market in unofficial ways and at lower prices, stressing that the quality or effectiveness of medicines that do not go through the approved oversight tracks cannot be guaranteed.
