The number of journalists detained in Israeli prisons has risen to 39, following the arrest of journalist Alaa al-Rimawi from Ramallah early Thursday morning. This comes amid a continued escalation of the policy targeting Palestinian journalists and obstructing their work in reporting events and documenting violations.
The Palestinian Prisoners Club stated in a press release that all currently detained journalists were arrested since the start of the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip. Twenty-one of them are being held under administrative detention, including journalists Muath Amarneh and Sabri Jabreen, whom the occupation authorities have ordered to be placed under administrative detention for four months.
The number of female journalists currently detained has reached five. Meanwhile, the occupation authorities continue to hold journalist Bushra al-Taweel in solitary confinement after transferring her from Damon Prison to Ramle Prison, with no information available regarding the conditions of her detention.
The Palestinian Prisoners Club explained that targeting Palestinian journalists is not limited to arrest, but extends to administrative detention, solitary confinement, harassment, and torture, in addition to subjecting them to harsh detention conditions and denying them medical treatment, as well as targeting them while they are carrying out their journalistic work.
The Club emphasized that these policies target the ability of Palestinian journalists to perform their professional duty and restrict their ability to report the facts, document violations, and convey what is happening on the ground to the public.
