This latest building collapse follows two similar incidents in just a few days, indicating the extent of the risks that damaged buildings now pose to the lives of residents. Last Wednesday, the “Happiness Building” in the industrial area west of Gaza City collapsed, killing 21 Palestinians, including 12 children and 5 women, and injuring 45 others. The building had been housing displaced families.
According to the Civil Defense, approximately 100 people, including about 50 children, were living in the building before its collapse. This incident reflects the severe overcrowding faced by displaced people, who are forced to live in places lacking basic safety standards.
This was not an isolated incident. On Friday, a residential building damaged by Israeli bombing during the war partially collapsed in the Sabra neighborhood south of Gaza City, injuring five children, according to Civil Defense spokesman Mahmoud Basal.
Saturday’s incident marked the third such collapse in four days, amid growing warnings about the dangers of buildings damaged by bombing, many of which are now largely uninhabitable but remain occupied due to the lack of alternative housing.
