Mohammed Al Mekhlafi
Saudi writer and novelist Ashraf Faqih has released a new novel with Takween Publishing. Titled The Philosopher: What al-Sarakhsi Narrated about Abu Yusuf al-Kindi, the novel is part of the publisher’s “Maraya” series and was released alongside the 2026 Riyadh International Book Fair.
Set in the Abbasid era, specifically in Samarra, the novel tells the story of Abu Yusuf Yaqub ibn Ishaq al-Kindi, known as the “Philosopher of the Arabs.” The story is narrated by Ahmad ibn al-Tayyib al-Sarakhsi, a student of al-Kindi and a close associate of his.
The novel opens during a war and siege, with fighting taking place around the city. A catapult stone falls as bodies begin to pile up, while the cries of those under siege rise from behind the walls. The story also looks at different aspects of al-Kindi’s life, along with questions of thought, philosophy and science and the conflicts of the Abbasid era.
Faqih has previously written in science fiction and historical fiction. His earlier works include Al-Mukhawziq, published in 2012, and Rasm al-Adam, published in 2020. He has also published several science-fiction short story collections.
