The Gaza Strip’s coastline has not been spared the inferno of Israel’s ongoing war of extermination, now in its fourth year. The sea, once a vital lifeline and a primary source of livelihood and sustenance for thousands of families, has been transformed into a scene of death and persecution by the systematic targeting of the Israeli occupation. Palestinian fishermen have been deprived of their most basic rights to work and live in dignity.
As the Israeli war enters its fourth year, the sea off the Gaza Strip is no longer a safe haven for fishing or providing for the families of thousands of fishermen. Instead, it has become a deadly zone where death stalks anyone who dares approach the shore. This vital sector has been subjected to systematic destruction, crippling its foundations and depriving Gaza of one of its most important sources of food and economic security. Zakaria Bakr, coordinator of the Palestinian fishermen’s committees in the Gaza Strip, affirms that during its ongoing aggression, the occupation forces have adopted a policy of directing and deliberately targeting fishermen and their facilities along the Gaza Strip’s coastline, a policy based on a structured and systematic decision from the highest levels of the Israeli leadership. He adds that the toll of Israeli violations and crimes against the fishing sector and fishermen, according to documented statistics, is shocking: 235 fishermen have been killed by Israeli fire, and 143 have been injured, including 16 serious injuries that prevented their victims from traveling abroad for treatment. Furthermore, the occupation forces have arrested 130 fishermen during this war of extermination.
Bakr explains that the targeting was not limited to killing and pursuing fishermen, but extended to include destroying the capabilities of the profession, as the occupation forces destroyed and damaged 1,810 fishing boats, which varied between “engine-powered boats, rowboats, and large launches”, in addition to destroying 270 fishing stations along the coastal strip out of 310 stations, and destroying a water desalination plant, an ice factory, a kitchen designated for fishermen, and the headquarters of the fishermen’s union in the five governorates of the Gaza Strip.
