The Ministry of Interior in Sana’a condemned on Friday the targeting by the Saudi forces of the Mayun Island lighthouse, known as the Bab Al-Mandeb lighthouse, warning of the repercussions of the targeting on the safety of maritime navigation in one of the most important waterways in the world.Exclusive Follow-ups — Al-Khabar Al-Yemeni:The Ministry said in a statement that the targeting of the lighthouse, which is more than 170 years old and is supervised by the Coast Guard Authority, represents an assault on a civilian facility that plays a pivotal role in guiding ships, especially during the night, noting that its importance transcends Yemen to include the safety of ships and sailors and the movement of international trade through the Bab Al-Mandeb Strait.The Ministry held the international maritime organizations and the parties concerned with the safety of navigation responsible for taking a clear position toward the targeting, and called for protecting the civilian maritime facilities and preventing them from being exposed to danger.The statement accused Saudi Arabia and the US of seeking to militarize the Red Sea and the Bab Al-Mandeb Strait and turn them into an arena for conflict and military positioning, warning that targeting the maritime facilities and escalating the military activities near the strategic straits raise the risks to ships, sailors, and the international trade and supply lines.The Ministry affirmed that protecting maritime navigation, according to its statement, requires respecting Yemen’s sovereignty over its islands, ports, and land and sea borders, and adhering to the international rules and norms regulating navigation, calling on the international community and the maritime organizations to take measures that prevent the recurrence of such incidents.Earlier, a military source in the Sana’a forces held Saudi Arabia responsible for threatening international navigation, after it targeted the Mayun Island lighthouse located in the strategic Bab Al-Mandeb Strait.The source affirmed in a statement to the “Saba” agency that “the Saudi enemy’s aircraft targeted the Mayun Island lighthouse,” considering that this threatens international navigation in the Red Sea.
